“Give me five reasons to continue being here. Without you.”
You looked at the doctor closely, his hands shaking the slightest amount for a nanosecond. He did not age the last four hundred years without more self-restraint.
“Reason one... It is better to have loved and lost than never loved at all. I can go back in time, make sure we never met.”
The Doctor watched your eyes widen at the mere possibility. It would surely have been worse to never know of the worlds out there rather than simply not being able to visit them.
“Reason two, Earth is amazing. All the best companions... you... are from here. It’s safe.”
Earth could provide a million different adventures, billions of people to be met and an infinite of possible futures.
“Reason three, I need to be alone with the Daleks for the plan to work.”
That was true; you’d never be able to walk out alive from what he had planned. He, himself, would probably have to regenerate.
“Reason four, I was never good to you.”
The constant explosions, doom’s day events, the pain, the blood, Daleks and screams of aliens and living for centuries with a man who had once destroyed his entire home planet... It was surely not good. But him? The adventures and the way he always protected you. He would always find you. He, he was good. That was a lie. Reason two was simply a lie.
“And reason five, perhaps the most important reason of all, if you end up dying because of me, in an adventure or you right now, right here, I’ll die. I need my companion safe. Not with me at all times, but safe.”
Five reasons. It was what you asked for.
You thought of that as you watched the bleary sky above you. Fire ripped over the ground as you shoved a Dalek aside.
“Five reasons why you should come back doctor. Reason one, Earth needs you.”
You ducked as rubble thudded against your back, laying cuts into your skin.
“Reason two, they are your enemies.”
Earth should never have been pulled into it.
“Reason three, they’re trying to find you.”
“EXTERMINATE! FIND THE DOCTOR! EXTERMINATE!”
“Reason four, I need you.”
A dalek turned towards you, focusing in on you and preparing to “EXTERMINATE!”
“Reason five, you promised to keep your companions safe.
“Hello, Dalek...” He slowly turned on his heels to face you, hand outstretched without hesitation. “Hello. You only had to ask for help.”
“Then why did you take so long?”
“I was saving your planet. I think my reason number two is invalid. So, into the Tardis. C’mon, we have a world to save.”
